New Year’s Skincare Resolutions

New Year’s Skincare Resolutions | blog | yearnskin.co.za

As we enter a brand new year, it’s a great time to set some skincare resolutions that will keep your skin healthy and glowing for the rest of the year and beyond. When January arrives, many people begin goal-setting. Some goals are unrealistic. Others are not too lofty, but may still fall by the wayside. If you set smart goals, however, you will find it much easier to stick to your goals (and enjoy the results).

Good skin habits are something you cannot afford to let slide, like those plans you had to learn a new language or launch that business idea that’s been brewing for months. Your skin is the body’s most important organ. Look after it well, and you will be rewarded with healthy, glowing skin. Whatever you age, setting realistic, easy to achieve skincare resolutions is the first step in looking after your skin this year.

Skincare Resolutions for the New Year

What exactly do we mean by realistic skincare resolutions? Which resolutions should you be focusing on? Can you still try out new skincare trends?

When we talk about realistic resolutions, we mean routines that become habits. These should be kept simple so that you don’t set yourself up for failure. While the best way to go about this is to focus on the basics, you don’t have to limit yourself when it comes to trends, products and other things to try.

An Everyday Health article features solid advice from Heather Richmond, MD, a board-certified dermatologist with the Dermatology and Laser Surgery Center in Houston. According to Dr Richardmond, long-term change isn't always easy. Consistency is essential, especially with skincare. Regular use of high-quality products will make a huge difference, but don’t expect results overnight.

Resolutions you should focus on include simplifying your skincare routine, incorporating essential vitamins such as vitamin C and vitamin A into your routine, levelling up your exfoliation game, not forgetting sun protection, and staying consistent.

Skincare Habits for 2022

Vogue consultant dermatologist Dr Thivi Maruthappu says that simplifying your routine can have a massive impact. “The most effective skincare routine is a simple one with well-thought-out active ingredients. Too many active ingredients, such as hydroxy acids and retinol, at different steps in your routine, can disrupt the skin barrier, worsen redness and increase sensitivities.” Wondering how to make things simpler? Dr Thivi Maruthappu also advises adding vitamin C products to your routine to increase your glow and brighten your skin. Try our Melt It Away Cleansing Balm and Active Brightening Facial Oil for a glow boost. Vitamin A derived products like our Retinol Renew Serum are equally important. Skincare.com editors shared their resolutions, with associate editor Ariel making the inclusion of retinoids her number one resolution in 2022.

Finding the right exfoliator is also vital. Removing dead skin cells is the most effective route to smoother, brighter skin - whatever your skin type. You don’t have to stick with manual exfoliants. Look for products such as our 5% Glycolic Exfoliating Tonic that contains glycolic acid. This product helps to remove dead cells, increasing skin cell renewal and improving skin texture and tone.

Don’t forget about sunscreen, either. According to Paula’s Choice, “Unprotected exposure to the sun is the main cause of skin ageing, including wrinkles, sagging or uneven-toned skin.” Look for day creams with a built-in SPF or invest in a quality sunscreen made for the face.

Finally, by far the most important resolution of all is to stay consistent. If you battle to follow a complicated routine, focus on the absolute basics. Invest in the right products for your skin type and concerns. Turn these tips into habits. Focus on nurturing your skin and giving it the love it deserves. You will start to see a difference over time.
