Aloe Extract - The Ultimate Skin Soother

Aloe Extract - The Ultimate Skin Soother | yearnskin.co.za

Aloe extract is a skincare ingredient derived from aloe vera. It is widely used in skincare products for its soothing, hydrating properties. Ideal for easing inflammation, irritation and sunburn, aloe is suitable for every skin type, including sensitive skin.ย

It can be used on its own, as a gel or even straight from aloe vera leaves. It is also found in products as an extract along with additional ingredients. This gives you all the benefits of aloe extract, in a single treatment.ย

WHAT IS IT?

Best known for its after-sun healing properties, aloe vera takes soothing and hydration to a whole new level. In skincare, it is used in everything from cleansers to tonics, moisturisers and serums. It is gentle enough to be used by skin prone to inflammation, perfect for dry skin thanks to its moisturising qualities and light enough to be used by those with oily and combination skin. It is also great for mature skin when used along with other anti-ageing ingredients.ย

Aloe extract is derived from the aloe vera plant - a succulent with plump leaves. These leaves contain a thick, gooey gel. It is harvested by peeling the tough outer skin of the leaves to access the gel. The gel is then processed to extract all the goodness.ย

WANT TO KNOW A LITTLE MORE SCIENCE BEHIND IT?

According to esthetician Renรฉe Rouleau, who was quoted in Elle, the science behind aloe comes down to its polysaccharides. "It has polysaccharides that give hydrating, anti-inflammatory benefits and allow for aloe to give a protective barrier on the skin. Aloe also has phytosterols which help to soothe itchiness and irritation while also giving protection to prevent TEWL (trans-epidermal water loss),โ€ she explains.ย

She adds that aloe is also high in vitamins A, B, C, D and E, along with minerals like magnesium, potassium and zinc, which further nourish the skin.ย

HOW DOES IT HELP YOUR SKIN?

Studies on the benefits of aloe for skin are still emerging. Itโ€™s important to note that this ingredient, like many others, are not to be considered a cure-all for every skin concern. The research that we have so far shows that the key benefit of aloe is its hydrating and soothing qualities.ย

Talking to Bydie, board-certified dermatologist Marnie Nussbaum, MD, says that the primary benefit of aloe is to soothe irritation, working well with other calming skin products. Aloe contains salicylic acid, which can help treat breakouts. Nussbaum says that the moisturising properties make it ideal for breakouts, as hydration is essential for healing.ย

In an Allure feature, cosmetic chemist and founder of BeautyStat Ron Robinson states, "Aloe is well known for its ability to help provide anti-inflammatory and soothing benefits to the skin, hence why it's so commonly used to help treat sunburn."

According to Mind Body Green, aloe helps with ageing, too. It stimulates the production of hyaluronic acid and collagen and elastin fibres, keeping skin hydrated, firm and supple.
